Addiction can happen to anyone, at any time. Your next-door neighbor could be addicted to the prescription her doctor gave her for back pain, for example. Your best friend’s teenager could get addicted to crystal meth tomorrow night. And maybe your sister’s boss is an alcoholic. Who knows?

As drug addiction levels across our country have spread, luckily another thing has spread and grown as well—addiction treatment centers. These centers have started popping up all over the country, and they are quite effective in treating all kinds of addiction.

Of course, the first step in treating addiction is for the drug addict to admit that he is addicted, for him to admit that he has a problem. Now, somebody like your next-door neighbor and her pain pills…she may not agree that she has an addiction—or, she may not think that her addiction is serious enough to require treatment at an addiction center. And your sister’s boss may just be unapproachable. Everyone in the office may know that he keeps a bottle of rum in his desk drawer, but it isn’t your sister’s place to talk to him about his alcohol addiction—no matter how right it would be, no matter how much she wants to.

On the other hand, your best friend’s teenager should be approached—through your best friend, of course. Hopefully the teenager will be reasonable and decide that addiction treatment is his best option.

Now, finding an addiction treatment center should start with a person’s insurance. Sometimes insurance will cover some or all of the costs of some types of treatment centers. Each insurance plan is different, though, so it is important to read carefully or call the company if the fine print is unclear.

Aside from checking into the insurance policy, looking for an addiction treatment center should center around where the person lives. Even if a residential treatment is chosen (where the addict lives at the center for a few weeks), it is best if the center is close to home simply for convenience and travel costs.

But, if checking into nearby addiction treatment centers reveals that the ones closest to home are not well-staffed or are not rated very highly it would certainly be better to choose a different, further treatment center. Convenience is not as important as selecting a highly-skilled treatment center.

Also, some addiction treatment centers may offer treatments only for certain types of addiction. Most do treat any drug addiction, but some may have specialized programs for, say, heroin addiction or crystal meth addiction. Or, some may have a special 12-step alcoholism program. So, it is smart to check around.

You might be surprised to find out who around you is addicted to a drug, but perhaps you can be helpful in finding treatment for them.
